Euroseas has reconfirmed plans to forego exhaust gas scrubbers in meeting the pending Marpol Annex VI call to lower bunker sulphur content to 0.5% by 2020.
The Aristides Pittas-led company stated in a December 2018 report that compliant fuel was the better option and that scrubbers were not environmentally friendly for the long term.
This preference was aired after dozens of shipowners in the boxship, bulker and cruiseship spaces had committed millions of dollars to the decades-old technology.
Euroseas doubled down today on its scrubber dismissal, saying they are not the safest bet.
"We are not installing scrubbers and we think it's a big risk especially for the smaller ships, with so many unknowns still on how they are going to work if they are going to be allowed," chief executive Aristides Pittas said.
"We just heard today that there is thought that on the Artic, the heavy fuel will be totally disallowed. I don't know what will happen but we are not taking that risk on our ships."
Euroseas has 10 feeder boxships and one intermediate containership.
