A ForestWave crewman believed kidnapped by Nigerian pirates has been found hiding on his general cargoship.

The Dutch operator said the discovery was made on the 10,600-dwt FWN Rapide (built 2005) late on Monday night during a search of the vessel.

The company had previously believed 12 seafarers were abducted from the ship in West Africa on Saturday, meaning the crewman had remained in hiding for the best part of three days.

Two crew were left onboard and this duo had managed to move the vessel to a safe location off Nigeria.

ForestWave said: "The valued seafarer who has been hiding on board of the vessel following an attack by pirates on Saturday April 20 is unharmed and in a healthy and good condition."

It confirmed no contact had yet been established with the 11 crew members that are still missing. "Their safety and swift return remains the company’s main priority," it added.

A representative of the company told TradeWinds it was still gathering information and did not have a full picture of the events as yet.

The vessel was en route from Takoradi, Ghana, to Port Harcourt, Nigeria.
