Utility firm Sembcorp Energy India has awarded a 10-year contract of affreightment (COA) for steam coal to Norden.

A total of 12m tonnes of cargo will be carried under the contract, which will employ panamax bulk carriers both owned and chartered in by the Danish shipowner.

The coal will be loaded at unnamed ports in Indonesia and South Africa and discharged at the port of Krishnapatnam, east coast India, once the contract commences on 1 April.

Sembcorp Energy India owns and operates two coal-fired power plants near Krishnapatnam.

“This contract not only allows us to show our commitment to growing our presence in India, but also enables us to position vessels across the load and discharge port regions, where they can be deployed to fulfil other contracts,” Jan Rindbo, chief executive of Norden, said in a statement.

Norden owns five panamax bulkers and has a further six on timecharter, according to data from VesselsValue. The value of the COA was not disclosed.
