Ten people have died following a carbon monoxide leak on board a Fujian Shipping bulker at a repair yard in China.

A further 19 people have been injured following the incident on the 69,000-dwt Jin Hai Xiang (built 1994) while dry docked at the Xixiakou yard, the New Zealand Herald reported, citing Chinese officials.

Fujian Shipping said in a statement the ship was undergoing its regular five-year special survey at the time of the accident.

It has sent a team to the yard to assist with an investigation, it added.

The Jin Hai Xiang is one of 26 bulkers in the fleet of Fujian Shipping.

The Herald reports the 19 injured on the ship are in hospital with their condition described collectively as stable.

Calls to Fujian Shipping seeking further comment were unanswered in Monday outside of Asian business hours.
