UK P&I Club has raised the alarm over terrorist groups operating along the south coast of the Philippines, causing problems for the nickel ore business.

The problem is especially focused on cargoes loaded at Mindanao, where shippers and mines are not allowing any access to these facilities.

There are numerous reports of bombings and kidnappings in the area along with the death of one Canadian mine manager.

Peter Modev, senior loss prevention executive at UK P&I Club, said: “The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advises against all travel to south-west Mindanao and the Sulu archipelago because of ongoing terrorist activity and clashes between the military and insurgent groups.

“A further significant issue in the region has been Philippine government’s decision to suspend export licences for nickel ore mines, due to environmental issues.”

Security measures for anyone trying to travel to Mindanao have been draconian over the past days.
