Volkswagen Group Logistics has signed up to the Ship Recycling Transparency Initiative (SRTI), an industry-wide group that encourages shipowners to follow responsible recycling practices.
The SRTI’s membership is made up of shipowners, insurers, investors and shippers, which all support green and safe recycling practices.
“Addressing challenges in ship recycling is a shared responsibility, and we are glad to have Volkswagen Group Logistics join the SRTI community and lead by example, showing how cargo owners can be aware of and take responsibility for their full supply chain, going above and beyond what is required,” said Simon Motter, head of Volkswagen Group Logistics.
The SRTI includes an online platform that allows owners to share information on their ship recycling policies and practices.
The idea is that the transparency will help cargo owners, financial stakeholders, insurance companies and others to make informed decisions, and reward the good practice of responsible recyclers through the market.
Shipowners can use the platform to disclose the regulation under which they have dismantled vessels. These can include the Hong Kong Convention for the Safe and Sound Recycling of Ships, the Basel Convention and the European Union Ship Recycling Regulation.
Thirty-one companies have signed up to the SRTI, including insurer Gard, shipowners AP Moller-Maersk, CMA CGM, Evergreen and NYK Line, and shippers John Deere and BMW.
