Maritime London has called on the UK government to continue to recognise the interests of the domestic shipping sector.

Lord Mountevans, chairman of Maritime London and Clarksons shipbroker, was reacting to last week’s election that saw the ruling Conservative party unexpectedly lose its overall majority.

The former Lord Mayor of the City of London said: “Following the result of the general election, Maritime London asks that stability be given the highest priority by the new government and, indeed, the new parliament.

“At this pivotal time for the United Kingdom, Maritime London urges that the new government continues to recognise the interests of the maritime services sector and the wider maritime industries in the imminent Brexit negotiations, as well as continuing to work together with all the maritime industries to implement and achieve the recommendations of the maritime growth study.”

According to Maritime London’s manifesto, the UK is able to offer maritime businesses a “one-stop shop” approach given that a large number of shipping firms, insurance companies and law firms are based in London.

Lord Mountevans added: “Maritime London commits itself to working closely with the new government and the new parliament in any way that it can to assist in this endeavour."
