Danish scrubber maker ME Production says it expects to be producing at least two scrubbers every week on the back of the high demand from the shipping industry.
As a result the company says it is opening a new facility in Jiaxing in China and is expanding its existing production facility in Denmark.
“We have rented new premises close to our existing headquarter in Frederikshavn, and with our new 2,000 sq metres we now have more than 6,000 sq metres at our disposal. Soon we will be opening a factory in China of about the same size,” says ME Production chief executive Jens Peter Faldt.
ME Production said it opted for the new facility in China to be close to newbuilding projects in the region, while the expansion of the Frederikshavn facility is designed to meet the increased demand for retrofitting.
“We expect to deliver one scrubber a week in both China and Denmark, and one unit costs between DKK 7.5 ($1.1m) and DKK 10m Danish kroner,” said Faldt.
ME Production says it has sold 31 scrubbers this year alone. In comparison, the company has only sold a total of six scrubbers in the past four years.
The company has also seen the number of employees increase from 55 to 90, and the company says it is expecting to continue expanding the team.
Last month Danish tanker owner Torm carried out its first scrubber retrofit aboard one of its product tankers.
The scrubber, supplied by ME Production, was installed aboard the 50,000-dwt Torm Lene (built 2008) at FAYARD in Denmark.
