The Norwegian freight, demurrage and defence club, Nordisk, has named deputy managing director, Karl Even Rygh, to succeed Georg Scheel, who is to retire in mid-April.

Rygh has been with Nordisk for seven years and before that was with the Thommessen law firm.

The new managing director has focussed on newbuilding contracts, ship financing, sale and purchase and bareboat transaction business at Nordisk, in addition to being part of the offshore and energy group.

Rygh who turns 40 this year and has Norwegian and English law degrees, was named new managing director by the Nordisk shipowner board, headed by chairman Terje Sorensen of Siem Offshore.

Scheel, who will have been with Nordisk for 35 years by the time he turns 65 in April, has been managing director since 2000.

“The appointment of Karl Even has been well received at Nordisk, due to the strong belief that he has the combination of skills and character needed to maintain and advance Nordisk’s position as a highly regarded provider of maritime legal services,” said a Nordisk statement.

Although Nordisk has always been headed by a lawyer the appointment of former Skuld executive, Tor Erik Andreassen, to the new role of chief operating officer last year prompted market speculation that the club might choose an insurance professional for the top job.
