Port of Antwerp is splashing out $10m on Brazil’s Porto do Acu as it looks to strengthen its presence in Latin America.

The key Belgian port said the investment confirms its long-term commitment towards the Brazilian market.

Porto do Acu is a privately owned hub in the northern part of Rio de Janeiro state and handles oil, gas, dry bulk, containers and general cargo.

It started operations in 2014 and has the capacity to receive large ships such as capesizes and VLCCs.

Port of Antwerp’s investment comes a week after it recorded a rise in cargo volumes of 2.8% in the first half, as it handled 111.38m tonnes of freight.
