Rotor sail developer Anemoi Marine Technologies has hooked up with China’s Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding to design sails for LNG carrier newbuildings.

Under a joint design cooperation agreement, Anemoi will assess the feasibility and design of rotor sails for installation on two vessels.

It will also develop specification requirements and designs that can be used for future installation projects to meet current and future environmental targets.

The partners said rotor sails are a good fit with LNG carriers due to the large amount of available deck space and limited impact on cargo operations.

They said the project hopes to “boost the confidence” of rotor sail technology for gas carrier owners and introduce a new generation of efficient and environmentally friendly LNG carrier designs.

Anemoi has been targeting different ship sectors this year with its rotor sails, which it says offer shipowners “significant fuel and emission savings”.

Chief operating officer Nick Contopoulos said: “With more stringent requirements related to emissions from shipping coming into force, combined with a pressure to protect the environment, shipowners are seeking practical technology that can be easily installed onboard vessels to improve their energy efficiency.”

In May, Anemoi said it was on track to have a production capacity to install up to 50 rotor sails a year by the end of 2023.
