A BW LNG carrier which grounded in the Suez Canal where it was then in collision with a tanker has resumed its voyage to Singapore.

BW LNG told TradeWinds that the 174,000-cbm BW Lesmes (built 2021) experienced a soft grounding before being “touched” by the tanker — the TMS Cardiff-managed 115,018-tanker Burri (built 2019) on its starboard side.

The incident occurred at approximately 2135 local time on 22 August 2023 with the LNG carrier refloated by the crew at 0330 local time on 23 August.

BW LNG said there were no injuries or pollution from the incident.

The company said the collision occurred at low speed.

It said the BW Lesmes sustained an indent to its hull and touchdown damage which will be repaired.

BW LNG said the ship has been released and is on its way to Singapore.

The company said it is waiting on the results of an investigation into the incident.

Kpler's vessel tracking data shows the ship is currently scheduled to arrive in Singapore on 22 September.

The ship is listed on Kpler as on charter to energy major BP.

The data tracking site shows the vessel loading a cargo at Freeport LNG in the US and calling at Spain's Cartagena terminal briefly before moving to the Suez Canal.

Accidents involving LNG carriers are relatively rare but prompt safety concerns in the industry when they do occur.
