Industry body the Society for International Gas Tanker & Terminal Operators has started a search for a new chief executive and general manager after existing GM Ian Revell opted to stand down from the position on health grounds.

In a message to members, Revell revealed he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer in January 2024, which surgery had not yet resolved.

“I have, therefore, resigned from my role as CEO in order to take a complete break from all activities for the next three to six months,” he said.

“I need to focus on my recovery from cancer and spend more time supporting my family while I consider future opportunities.”

Revell thanked the orgnaisation for its support and said leading Sigtto for the past two years had been “a great privilege”.

He highlighted that during his time in the post, Sigtto has grown its membership, added more technical safety guidance levels to industry, supported the redevelopment of the IGC Code at the International Maritime Organization, improved its financial stability and created new working groups focused on the safe carriage of future fuels.

Engineer Revell took on the lead role at Sigtto on 1 September 2022 after career roles with classification society Lloyd’s Register and V.Group.

Former Maersk Tankers’ employee Oommen has been working with Sigtto as an adviser from the start of 2011, first on secondment and full-time from late 2014.

The industry body said: “The board has also created an executive search and selection committee to identify a full-time replacement to lead the Sigtto organisation.”
