Bangladesh’s Meghna Group of Industries is adding to its LPG carrier fleet with an order at its domestic shipyard.

The country’s largest private shipowner will build the fully pressurised vessel at Meghna Shipbuilders & Dockyard for delivery in 2026.

Finnish technology group Wartsila will supply a complete cargo handling system for the ship, which will be run by subsidiary Meghna Fresh LPG.

The price of the newbuilding is not known.

Meghna also owns the energy industries the LPG carrier will serve, according to Wartsila.

Wartsila Gas Solutions has been involved in the four previous 5,000-cbm LPG carriers constructed for Meghna at the yard in 2020 and 2021.

Wartsila will supply deck machinery, LPG piping, instrumentation, interface materials linking the cargo tanks and hull, and the cargo control system.

It will also help manage construction.

Knut-Erik Heggem, sales manager of Wartsila Gas Solutions, said: “This latest order represents an endorsement of the continuous support, the quality of our product designs and the functionality of the systems that Wartsila delivers.”

The new carrier will operate on inland rivers and in the deep ocean.

Its capacity has not been disclosed, but Wartsila’s system is designed for ships of between 1,500 cbm and 13,000 cbm.

Meghna’s fleet is also operated by subsidiaries Mercantile Shipping Lines and United Shipping Lines.

VesselsValue assesses the 69 ships as worth $945m.

Vessels include ultramaxes, supramaxes and small tankers.

Meghna, led by chairman and managing director Mostafa Kamal, also has interests in commodities, logistics, LPG, power generation, aviation, healthcare and property.

It branched into shipping in 2010 and has since amassed Bangladesh’s largest commercial shipping fleet.

A series of four 66,100-dwt ultramaxes was delivered from Yangzijiang Shipbuilding in China in 2022 and 2023.
