New Fortress Energy has finally exported a first cargo from its offshore “Fast LNG” unit off Altamira in Mexico, more than a year later than planned.
The US-listed company said late on Monday that its first cargo has been loaded and has sailed from its project.
The shipment was loaded onto the 138,000-cbm Energos Princess (built 2003) and will be delivered to the company’s La Paz terminal in Mexico.
Kpler data shows the LNG carrier leaving from alongside the project’s floating storage unit, the 160,000-cbm NFE Penguin (built 2014), on 10 August with an estimated time of arrival on 15 August.
“We’re excited to begin supplying our customers with our own LNG — a significant milestone for our company and the world of LNG,” New Fortress said.
Fast LNG was originally scheduled to start production in June 2023.
Last week, New Fortress chief executive Wes Edens said the company had wanted to bring the project online for April 2024 but missed this date.
The 1.4m tonnes per annum capacity Fast LNG unit — which consists of three converted semi-submersible drilling rigs linked together — suffered a coldbox blowout in April that covered the structure in perlite insulation material.
Fast LNG is now due to undergo a scheduled maintenance outage of about a week before ramping up to full production.
New Fortress is developing another liquefaction facility onshore at Altamira dubbed Fast LNG 2, due for start-up in the first half of 2026.
