Shipowner Purus Marine has boosted its leadership ranks with the hiring of former K Line executive Tomoyuki “Tomo” Okawa.

The Japanese shipping veteran has been appointed as a senior advisor to the gas, offshore and ferry owner, it announced today.

Okawa boasts a 40-year shipping career on his CV, including spells as chairman and chief executive of K Line Offshore and executive officer of the Japanese giant’s energy transportation business.

Purus explained: “Tomo will serve as Purus’ representative in Japan, supporting key relationships with customers, financiers and shareholders.”

Purus, which claims to have one of the world’s largest and youngest fleets of gas carriers, boasts 65 vessels in total.

The company, led by chief executive Julian Proctor and chaired by Gregg Hymowitz, had contracted revenue of $2.3bn at the end of May, according to its latest investor presentations.

Okawa joined its ranks just a month after Luke Hendriksen was recruited as fleet director for the company’s wind division.

He was hired from oil major BP where he had led the North Sea Marine team until and was most recently the Ports and Shipbuilding package manager.

The Purus gas fleet spans seven ammonia carriers, four LNG carriers and three ethane ships.

It also has a large electric ferry fleet and is invested in carbon capture and offshore wind construction vessels.
