Samsung Heavy Industries has secured a newbuilding contract for an LNG carrier taking its tally for the year to 11 ships.

The newbuilding is costing KRW 225.5bn ($185m) and is due to be delivered by October 2021, it said in a regulatory filing.

The South Korean shipbuilder declined to identify the counter-party other than to describe them as “an Asian customer”.

With the deal, Samsung Heavy has secured deals valued at $3.6bn in total so far this year or around 46% of its annual target.

Orders so far this year comprise 19 vessels including 11 LNG carriers, four tankers, one special-purpose ship and an FPSO.

Last month Samsung reported a second quarter net loss of KRW 309.4m, more than double a loss of 142.7 billion a year earlier.

A legal fight with drilling rig giant Ensco saw it lose a $180m arbitration battle in May. However, it is appealing the decision.
