The new 6,500-cbm ship is on order at STX Offshore & Shipbuilding in South Korea and will be based at the port of Rotterdam upon delivery.

It will load from a new bulk terminal to be constructed by Gas Access to Europe (Gate).

Wartsila’s engines are scheduled for delivery in spring 2016 and will enable the newbuilding to operate on either gas or diesel.

Aaron Bresnahan, vice president of sales at Wartsila Ship Power, said: “This new specialised vessel is an important step towards LNG becoming the fuel of choice for shipping in Europe.

“LNG eases compliance with both the new and anticipated future IMO environmental regulations and we are proud that our development of technologies throughout the gas chain is of increasing value to the marine sector.”
