The Swedish Club’s Ludvig Nyhlén is to take up the position of area manager at the protection and indemnity mutual’s Piraeus office.

Greece is an important market for the Swedish Club. According to its 2020 financial report, it is its second-largest market after China in terms of premium income. The Gothenburg- based mutual earned $31.9m in gross premium revenue from Greece in 2020.

Nyhlén said he sees the slow recovery form the global pandemic as a chance to develop the Swedish Club’s business in Greece.

He said that the Swedish Club is in “good shape” following he pandemic and he is aiming to build on the its 40-year presence in the country.

“We have the chance to start afresh, to work and develop together with our members and learn from the last 18 months. I am very much looking forward to meeting both members and business partners face to face and being able to build upon the relationships that the club has established over the years,” he said.

Nyhlén replaces Hans Filipsson, who has stepped down after eight years to take up an advisory role.

The Swedish Club is a P&I mutual but also provides additional marine insurance lines, including hull and machinery.

Managing director Lars Rhodin said Nyhlén would be a “great asset to team Piraeus.”

The Swedish Club made a $3m operating profit in 2020 and grew its shipowner mutual and chartered business to a record high of 88m gt.
