Former Ince partner Paul Herring is to join the UK Defence Club in the newly created role of legal director.

Herring has been tasked with growing the freight defence and demurrage (FD&D) club’s international footprint and developing thought leadership in areas such as decarbonisation.

The move is a fresh start for Herring who has been with Ince for more than 43 years.

He was a partner and also held the position of chairman at a difficult time for the law firm shortly before it was acquired by now-owner Gordon Dadds. More recently he held the role of office head in Piraeus. “We’re extremely pleased to welcome Paul to the UK Defence Club,” said UK Defence Club chief executive Daniel Evans.

“He brings an unparalleled wealth of legal and commercial experience to our management team and will help set us on course to further enhance the service that we provide to our members and to continue to grow our international membership base.”

Evans is moving from his base in Greece to London to focus on the continued development of the UK Defence Club.

Ince said Herring will be replaced by Jamila Khan who has spent the last 10 years with Ince in Piraeus. “Ince are very grateful for his years of dedicated service and wish him all the best for his new role with the UK Defence Club,” said Michael Volikas, Head of Shipping Ince’s London office.

New challenge

Herring said: “Over the course of my career, I have been fortunate enough to be involved in many cases with the UK Defence Club. I look forward to the new challenges this newly created role will bring and trust I can bring to bear the experience I have gained through my career in private practice for the benefit of the club and its members.”

The UK Defence Club is part of a stable of mutuals, including the UK P&I Club, which are managed by insurance services company Thomas Miller.

In other moves at the UK P&I Club Sean Geraghty will become the new regional director at its Greek office in November.

David Harley will join the UK Club’s Hong Kong Office at the end of September. He has previously worked for the Britannia and North P&I Club in Hong Kong.
