Eight crewmen have been remanded in custody following a Greek raid on a cargoship carrying explosives and detonators.

The master of the 2,200-dwt Andromeda (built 1979) was reported to have told authorities that the owner had ordered him to go to Libya with the cargo.

But the owner told local media Libya was just a storage option that was not taken up after the cargo owners defaulted on payments.

The two Ukrainians, five Indians and an Albanian had appeared before a Piraeus prosecutor on charges of violating maritime safety laws, the Kathimerini daily reported.

A total of 29 crates of explosives and detonators had been confiscated on 8 January off Crete.

Owner Theodoros Rellos was quoted as saying the cargo was due to go to Djibouti, but the cargo owners did not pay Suez Canal fees.

"Due to the nature of the cargo we headed from anchorage to anchorage," Rellos added.

The vessel is listed as operated by Andromeda Shipmanagement of Athens.
