Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries is to appeal a $180m damages award to Ensco over a cancelled drillship charter contract.

The shipbuilder said a London arbitration tribunal had ordered the payment as compensation to the UK-based company.

Ensco had started proceedings against Samsung in 2016 after its charter deal with Brazilian oil major Petrobras was cancelled over corruption charges.

It claimed that Samsung was partly responsible for the cancellation.

The 60,100-gt DS 5 (built 2011) vessel had a five-year deal with Petrobras, but this was torn up in 2016.

Petrobras claimed that some of the commission paid by Samsung was improperly used, the Yonhap news agency reported.

Samsung is to take the case to the UK high court.
