Australian ferry owner TT-Line is facing a negligence action after 16 prize polo ponies died on a Bass Strait crossing.

ABC reported the suit has been filed in the Victoria supreme court by former Australian polo team captain Andrew Williams, and also includes logistics company QUBE Holdings.

The animals died on a TT ferry in January, the civil claim said.

In the suit, Williams alleges a failure to provide a safe environment, adequate checks and airflow for the horses.

He is seeking AUD 639,000 ($824,000) for the loss and AUD 100,000 for loss of profit.
