Multipurpose ship values are set to go through the roof, especially if they have container carrying capacity, if one recently reported deal turns out to be a new benchmark.

Norwegian owner Oslo Bulk has reportedly sold a 21-year-old vessel to an undisclosed buyer for an astonishing $12m.

The 17,500-dwt Oslo Wave (built 2000) had a value estimated by pricing service VesselsValue of just $7.05m.

Values are set to surge on the back of the hot bulk carrier and container markets.

Oslo Bulk chief executive Alf Andersen confirmed the sale to TradeWinds but declined to comment on the price.

However, he confirmed that the vessel’s container carrying capacity of 1,118-teu increased the attraction to potential buyers and charterers.

Valuation difficulties

Andersen said that illiquid markets such as the multipurpose sector can be difficult to evaluate and that he raised this with UK-online service VesselsValue.

Oslo Bulk sold a similar ship this summer. The company sold the 17,500-dwt Oslo Wave 2 (built 2000) to Russian interests for an undisclosed price.

Oslo Bulk is controlled by a number of investors, including Andersen, John Hatleskog, the Steensland family and Dag Rommen.
