Canadian offshore shipowner Horizon Maritime is eyeing new business in a tie-up with a First Nation shipping operation.
It has formed Miawpukek Horizon Maritime Services with the Miawpukek people in Newfoundland & Labrador.
They want to capitalise on emerging opportunities in the local marine industry.
The new company has evolved from a relationship that started with the recruitment and development of First Nations seafarers, as Horizon sought to expand its crew network and further diversify its workforce.
"Miawpukek seafarers have become valued members of the Horizon Maritime team and strong relationships between Miawpukek Tribal Council and Horizon Maritime principals have developed as a result," Horizon said.
The tribe already works in aquaculture and fisheries, as well as ocean stewardship.
Chief Mi'sel Joe said: "Our relationship with Horizon Maritime has been built over time and it is clear that our values match in a way that will benefit our community, our industry, our province and be an example for our country."
Sean Leet, CEO of Horizon Maritime, told TradeWinds: "We are particularly excited to explore opportunities in aquaculture and ocean monitoring and recognise that the partnership may provide valuable support to other coastal and offshore industries."
Horizon also has operations in Norway.
