UK shipowner Purus has signed a multi-year service contract with Danish offshore wind turbine giant Vestas.

The contract will employ Purus’ newbuilding commissioning service operation vessel Purus Chinook, which is being built at Vard’s shipyard in Norway.

It will begin immediately after the methanol-ready vessel’s launch in 2025.

Purus did not disclose specific terms.

“The cutting-edge vessel design ensures it will meet the highest industry standards for offshore service, safety and latest hybrid battery technology to lower emissions and reduce engine hours,” it said.

The Purus Chinook will be able to house up to 120 people.

It offers an all-electric gangway, 18-metre helideck, 3D motion compensated crane and next-generation Chartwell 12-passenger daughter craft.

A sister ship in the Vard 419 series, the Purus Coriolis, will follow in 2026.

“Both vessels underscore Purus’ commitment to decarbonising the maritime sector by incorporating future sustainability options, such as the potential for dual-fuel methanol-ready propulsion to further lower emissions, which is being targeted for possible implementation from 2027,” the owner added.

In September, Purus confirmed another order for ammonia carriers as it aims for a market-leading position in that sector.

It said it had contracted two 45,000-cbm dual-fuel, ammonia-ready midsize gas carriers at HD Hyundai Mipo in South Korea for delivery in 2027.

No cost was given.

Purus also owns four LNG carriers and three ethane ships, plus a large electric ferry fleet, and is invested in carbon capture.
