A semi-submersible drilling rig ordered in 2013 is en route to its first contract after having been subject to delays, disputes and a resale.

The unit, named Deepsea Nordkapp, has been delivered to Norway’s Odfjell Drilling from Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), South Korea.

Stena originally ordered the rig in 2013 for $727m but cancelled the deal in 2017, claiming SHI was unable to complete and deliver the unit by March 2016, as per the contract.

Odfjell purchased the newbuilding for $505m from Stena Drilling in April 2018, when it was awarded the contract with AkerBP.

From the yard in South Korea, Deepsea Nordkapp will make its way to the Norwegian Continental Shelf, where it will commence a two-year contract with AkerBP in the second quarter 2019.

The drilling contract comes with an optional two-year extension period.

Stena has commenced legal proceedings against SHI and is seeking reimbursement of the $215m already paid in pre-delivery installments.

The rig has been built to operate in harsh environments and features an “enhanced” Moss Maritime CS-60 design.
