Dutch shipping company Vroon has won its first ever offshore support vessel contract in Cambodia.

The 5,150-bhp anchor handling tug supply vessel VOS Atlas (built 2012), which is operated by Vroon Offshore Services (VOS) in Singapore, has started work for an unnamed domestic company.

The vessel has been redelivered from a previous charter in Thailand.

"As we approach the end of 2020, we are delighted to have secured employment in what is a new country for us," the company said.

"As well as being the first time we have worked in Cambodia, the offshore oilfield involved is the first to be developed there in a long time."

Modest production

Vroon added that anticipated production levels are modest compared to Thailand or Malaysia.

But the move represents the first step in a decade to develop the Cambodian oil and gas sector.

"We are proud to supply one of the first OSVs to work here," Vroon said.

The company said it maintained strict adherence to all Covid-19 measures, working hard to hand over the VOS Atlas safely and on time.

The ship will support a drilling campaign using the PVD-3 jack-up rig at five locations.

The VOS Atlas is expected to stay in the region until the end of January 2021.

Cambodia has been importing oil from neighbouring countries for years. But, in 2017, Singapore energy company KrisEnergy signed a deal for Cambodia Block A, in the Khmer Basin in Cambodian waters in the Gulf of Thailand.

The licence contains the Apsara oil discovery.

KrisEnergy chartered the PVD-3 from PV Drilling in August this year.

The unit was hired to drill five development wells.
