Liner operator APL has restarted its passenger operations after a hiatus of almost three decades.
The Singapore-based outfit is hiring out cabins on eight of its boxships at about €110 ($130) per day.
Formerly known as American President Lines, APL began as a passenger company. It operated a fleet of luxury liners on transpacific trades and around-the-world services on its cargoships.
The company ditched its passengerships in the early 1970s but continued its cargoship passenger services until the early 1990s.
The resumption of services is tied to its takeover by CMA CGM. The French liner giant also has its roots in passenger operations and carries up to 12 travellers on many of its own ships.
Demand remains strong and the clientele eclectic, including those who enjoy freight travel and those who want to avoid flying.
CMA CGM’s office in Marseilles has been tasked with handling APL passenger bookings.
