Mexican ferry operator Baja Ferries has decided against repairing the fire-damaged 28,000-gt ro-pax ferry Caribbean Fantasy (built 1989). Brokers report that the ship has now been sold for recycling.
The vessel, currently laid up in the Bahamas, has been sold as is/where is for $145 per ldt.
It is not clear yet where the ship will be scrapped. It will have to be towed as its engines are inoperable due to damage incurred during a fire last August while operating between San Juan and Santo Domingo on charter to America Cruise Ferries (ACF).
The only casualties from the fire were two dead dogs.
ACF subsequently replaced the Caribbean Fantasy with the 30,000-gt ro-pax ferry Kydon (built 1990), which it charters from Greek ferry operator ANEK Lines.
The sale leaves Baja Ferries with three large ro-pax ferries and a ro-ro vessel recently purchased from Australian interests.
