Italy has banned big cruiseships from Venice's historic but fragile city centre.
Reuters reported that vessels of more than 100,000 gt will be barred.
They will instead have to take a less scenic route to the port of Marghera.
The new legislation follows a temporary restriction put in place three years ago after concerns that huge ships were damaging the city's shallow lagoons and canals.
Venice mayor Luigi Brugnaro said the plan answered residents' needs, as well as tourism and environmental requirements.
The new route could take as many as four years to open, however, the government said.
Ships weighing more than 96,000 gt were banned from the Giudecca canal in 2013. The number of smaller ships was limited to five a day, although this was overturned in 2015.
