The Amerikalinjen, a boutique luxury hotel, will open its doors in March at Jernbanetorget 2 in the heart of Oslo.

If the name and the building itself seem familiar, that is because it was formerly the headquarters of the Den Norske Amerikalinje (Norwegian America Line), once considered Norway’s flagship shipping company.

Den Norske Amerikalinje operated a fleet of luxury passengerships from 1910 until its last two cruiseships were sold in 1983. During the company’s history, its ships carried tourists, mail and about one million emigrants between Norway and the US.

The Amerikalinjen building, completed in 1915, went on to serve other owners in different roles after the company’s last ships were sold.

Now, after an extensive refurbishment, its glory days as a symbol of seagoing luxury and the link with its glamorous past are set to return.

Craft cocktails

The new 122-room hotel will feature restaurants and bars including the Atlas Brasserie and Cafe, an all-day dining venue, and Pier 42 — named after Den Norske Amerikalinje’s former passenger terminal in New York — will serve up craft cocktails. Its Gustav Club will offer live jazz, dancing and drinks.

Elements of maritime history will feature prominently in the hotel’s decor.

Its website shows a range of rooms featuring high ceilings and a level of luxury that rivals that once found on Den Norske Amerikalinje's ships, which were frequently ranked as the best afloat.
