Carnival Corp will accommodate thousands of political dignitaries next month in the southwestern Pacific.

The New York-listed cruise major will charter P&O Cruises Australia's 70,310-gt Pacific Jewel (built 1990) and 77,441-gt Pacific Explorer (built 1997) and Princess Cruises' 77,499-gt Sea Princess (built 1998) to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit.

The VIP gathering, to be held 17 and 18 November in Papua New Guinea's Port Moresby, will consist of 10,000 delegates, senior officials and journalists from APEC's 21 member countries.

"Carnival Australia has established a strong relationship with Papua New Guinea and its people and is proud to have included eight destinations in Papua New Guinea on its itineraries from Australian-based ships since 2013," Carnival Australia executive chairman Ann Sherry said.

Carnival would not disclose the financial terms of the three charters.

The summit will end with an economic leaders' meeting on 18 November with presidents, prime ministers and other senior world leaders.

Papua New Guinea, a nation of eight million people and more than 800 languages, is 100 miles north of Australia and just south of the equator.

The island nation is a favourite destination for cruises in Oceania, which features beaches protected coral reefs, waterfalls, rainforests, volcanic mountains and World War II relics.
