Celestyal Cruises is planning to order new vessels as it seeks to update its ageing fleet.

The Piraeus company’s CEO Kyriakos Anastassiadis has been cited by cruise industry publications as saying: “We will definitely get newbuilds. It’s just a matter of time.”

The new ships will be a maximum of 60,000 gt and carry no more than 1,800 people.

Celestyal has spoken to shipyards and is examining slot availability, as well as financing.

A ship designer is in place, but Anastassiadis admitted: “The problem is the shipyards are full and the earliest we would get a newbuilding would be 2021 or 2022.”

Celestyal owns six ships built between 1968 and 1992.
