A Carnival-owned passengership rescued 11 seafarers aboard a fish carrier in the Mediterranean Sea off of Greece's Peloponnese.

The 92,720-dwt Costa Luminosa (built 2009) was sailing south of the Peloponnese at around midnight Tuesday when it received a request for intervention from the Hellenic Coast Guard.

Carnival said the 2,887-dwt Kilic I (built 1986) was in "serious distress due to a fire onboard", endangering the lives of 11 seafarers on the Kilic Holding-owned vessel.

The passengership deviated from its route to reach the boat under Capt Pietro Sinisi's guidance, allowing the crew to rescue Kilic I's personnel despite heavy smoke, 30-knot winds and two-metre waves.

The saved crewmembers were recovered from Kilic I's bow by a Costa Luminosa tender and then taken ashore by a cargoship involved in Greek coast guard operations.

All 11 seafarers are in good health, Carnival said.

AIS data showed Kilic 1 not under command on Tuesday.

The ship is operated by Kilic Deniz Urunleri Uretimi.
