Genting Hong Kong, the parent company of Star Cruises, Dream Cruises and Crystal Cruises, is bringing a bit of Caribbean innovation to the South East Asian cruise market by developing its own private island for the exclusive pleasure of its cruise guests.
The company has teamed up with resort operator Tint Tint Myanmar to develop a private resort on Macleod Island, which it describes as a secluded paradise located in the Myeik Archipelago off southern Myanmar.
Passengers sailing on Star’s 42,300-gt Superstar Libra (built 1988) and Dream’s 150,700-gt Genting Dream (built 2016) will be able to spend a day frolicking on the island’s pristine white beaches and enjoy exclusive use of its facilities.
Private islands are a key feature on the itineraries of many cruise lines in the Caribbean, with the concept having started back in the late 1970s when Norwegian Cruise Line leased a small island in the Bahamas archipelago.
Genting is well versed in developing land-side cruise infrastructure, having built piers, terminals and other such facilities in Malaysia and Thailand when it first brought mainstream cruising to Asia back in the mid-1990s.
Macleod Island is its first attempt at creating its own private island.
