Norwegian owner Fjord1 has signed contracts for seven new battery-powered ferries after winning a big domestic contract.
The Saevik family-backed company said Havyard in Norway will build five 50-passenger vessels for NOK 800m ($102m), while Turkey's Cemre Shipyard will construct a pair of 80-pax ships for an undisclosed price.
Havyard has designed all seven and delivery is set for autumn 2019.
The likely total price is around NOK 1.2bn.
The ferries will be state of the art in innovation and environmental impact, Fjord1 said.
They will use zero and low-emission technology based on electric propulsion.
New routes to serve
Fjord1 managing director Dagfinn Neteland said: "We see that Norwegian suppliers are at the forefront when it comes to innovation in relation to the environment and technology, which is crucial for us at Fjord1."
The company, which already has 88 ships, said earlier this year it was planning to order "a lot" of new ferries after winning a lucrative domestic contract.
It clinched a NOK 1.88bn tender to serve routes between Edoya and Sandvika, Arasvika and Hennset, Seivika and Tommervag, and Kvanne and Rykkjem.
The deal with the More og Romsdal local authority will begin on 1 January, 2020.
