Carnival has appointed a former executive at the National Basketball Association to its board of directors.

The Miami cruise giant said Jason Cahilly, the former chief strategic and financial officer for the NBA, will serve in a non-executive capacity and will join the audit committee.

He brings 20 years of financial experience in sports, communications, media and entertainment, Carnival said.

The addition of Cahilly brings Carnival's board contingent to 11.

"Jason brings extensive leadership experience to Carnival and valuable expertise in a wide variety of areas," said chairman Micky Arison. "We look forward to working with him closely and gaining insights from his unique perspective as we continue growing demand for our 10 global brands."

Cahilly worked at the NBA between January 2013 and June of this year after spending 12 years at Goldman Sachs.

He has a law degree from Harvard Law School and a bachelor's degree in international relations and economics from Bucknell University.

Cahilly is likely no stranger to the billionaire Arison, who is owner of the NBA's Miami Heat franchise.

His appointment came a day after Carnival announced other changes to its board of directors.

Randall Weisenburger replaced Stuart Subotnick as senior independent director and presiding director, as part of a "periodic rotation" of board roles.
