Palumbo Malta Shipyard has given a new lease of life to Silversea Cruises' first vessel.

It has converted the 16,900-gt Silver Cloud (built 1994) into an ice-class expedition ship, it said

The yard says the work for the Monaco-based company has turned the veteran into "the most spacious and comfortable ice-class vessel in expedition cruising."

Silver Cloud arrived on 26 August. Works included structural, mechanical and electrical modification on most systems.

The refit also involved complete refurbishments of public areas including external glazing, staterooms, restaurants and open decks, including a new observation lounge.

The project lasted two months and Silver Cloud is now repositioning to make its first expedition cruise from Buenos Aires to Antarctica.
