Princess Cruises unveiled plans for a "multi-million dollar" upgrade of a cruiseship that will add a new youth centre and outfit the vessel for Carnival Corp's latest technology initiative.
The cruise line, which is the main premium brand under the Carnival umbrella, said it will carry out the work on the 3,080-berth Caribbean Princess (built 2014) during a scheduled two-week dry docking in the Bahamas starting 26 March..
The work will presumably take place at Grand Bahama Shipyard, where Carnival is a major shareholder.
The project will add a Camp Discovery Youth and Teen Center and will wire the ship for the Ocean Medallion, a wearable technology that will be available to passengers in 2018.
New cabin types
Princess is also adding interconnecting staterooms and Club Class Mini-Suites to the ship. The California-based cruise line did not say whether the work will result in any changes to the vessel's passenger capacity, and a spokesperson could not be immediately reached for comment.
"With new amenities catering to families, Caribbean Princess not only provides comfort and technology to stay connected but enriching experiences that can be shared together as a family or in our new Camp Discovery Youth & Teen Center – all renovated with the goal of helping our guests create lifelong memories," said Jan Swartz, president of the line.
Among other enhancements, Princess will add a new HD Movies Under the Stars outdoor movie screen.
