Sports fans can now watch football’s biggest spectacle on the high seas.

Carnival-owned Princess Cruises has announced that it plans to show all 64 matches of the 2018 World Cup in Russia on nine of its 17 ships — Sea Princess, Crown Princess, Diamond Princess, Emerald Princess, Majestic Princess, Pacific Princess, Regal Princess, Royal Princess and Sapphire Princess.

The action, which began this week and culminates in the final in Moscow on 15 July, will be broadcast live on 300-square-foot (28-square-metre) Movie Under the Stars screens, with viewing space for hundreds of guests.

The LED screens, suitable for daytime and night-time viewing, are backed by a 69,000-watt sound system for when the ship is travelling at full speed.

“What better way to enjoy this dynamic, global tournament than on our giant outdoor movie screens against the backdrop of sea and sky,” Princess Cruises president Jan Swartz said.

Viewers can also participate in themed entertainment and activities, including interactive PlayStation game play on the huge screens, as well as obstacle course competitions and penalty shootouts for prizes.

This is not the only time the company has pushed the boat out for sports fans. It offers more football (of the American gridiron variety) with Monday Night Football and the Super Bowl. And if you really want to get into the spirit, Princess also offers a Game of the Week Tailgate Party. These quintessentially American game-day rituals are basically an excuse to consume pizza, burgers, hot dogs, beer buckets and team-inspired drink specials.

Princess Cruises will provide all of that. Everything, in fact, apart from an actual tailgate.
