Norwegian shipowner Gjert Wilhelmsen has died at the age of 91.
Wilhelmsen ran shipping company Awilhelmsen with his brother Arne, after the company was founded by his father Anders in 1939.
Beginning in the late 1960s, the Wilhelmsen Brothers developed Royal Caribbean Cruises into what became the world's second largest cruiseship owner.
In 1988, A Wilhelmsen bought out its partners Gotaas-Larsen and IM Skaugen to prevent RCCL being purchased by rival Carnival.
US-listed Royal Caribbean is still the main asset of Awilhelmsen, but the outfit is a diversified investment company also involved with VLCCs and containerships.
Gjert sat on the board of Awilhelmsen until 2012 and worked with Arne in the company through most of his professional career.
He was chairman of the classification society Det Norske Vertas from 1992 to 1998.
He was educated at the Norwegian Institute for Technology (NTH) in Trondheim.
