Russia's Sakhalin Shipping Co (Sasco) is increasing ferry sailings to Japan this summer.

The owner, based on the far east island of Sakhalin, will use one ship to travel to Hokkaido, the ITAR-Tass news agency.

Before the end of the 2017 summer season, it will make as many as 78 voyages, up from 15 in 2016.

Sasco originally ran the route in 1997 and sold it to another operator, Heartland Ferry, in 1999.

This company eventually found it to be unprofitable and dropped it in 2015.

Sasco resumed operations last year.
