Balearia signed a long-term supply agreement with Spain's leading natural gas supplier for liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkers at three major ports.
Gas Natural Fenosa will initially deliver LNG to the ferry operator at the ports of Barcelona, Valencia and Algeciras.
Fenosa says it will deploy an LNG bunkering barge for distribution in Barcelona. LNG will eventually be distributed to other ports as infrastructure gets built.
Balearia ordered two dual-fuelled ro-pax vessels capable of running on LNG at Cantiere Navale Visentini in Italy, along with another LNG-fuelled ferry at Spanish shipyard LaNaval.
The total cost of the vessels, which will operate around the Balearic islands, is about €200 million.
