The Danish government is considering selling its 50% stake in Danske Faerger (Danish Ferries), the passengership company it owns with Clipper Group.

A spokesperson for the ministry of transport, building and housing told TradeWinds the possibility was being examined.

"A prospective future buyer will have to respect existing agreements, including agreements on service of current ferry crossings, thus ferry services will not be affected by a potential sale."

InsideBusiness estimated the stake as being worth between DKK 800m and DKK 1bn ($155.5m).

The company operates five domestic ferries on two routes from Bornholm to Sweden and Germany.

Talks are reportedly ongoing, but no names have emerged as potential buyers.

Clipper, which owns the other 50%, told TradeWinds it had no comment on the matter.

The shipowner has previously said it wanted to retain its interest, describing it as a good business.

In a report for 2016, Clipper said Danske Faerger had performed exceptionally well, with significantly more freight and passengers transported than in 2015.

It increased car transport by 6.3% to 1.12m and passenger numbers by 3.6% to 4.28m.
