Stena has confirmed a ro-ro newbuilding order with the ship set for a long-term charter to DFDS.

The Danish owner announced yesterday it had signed a 10-year bareboat charter with Stena to boost its English Channel capacity – however, details of the ship were not known.

This morning Stena announced it had inked a fifth ship in the E-Flexer RoPax series at Avic International in China.

“The design of the ship will be worked out in close cooperation with DFDS. This deal is a good example of how we work being the largest and most well-known tonnage provider in the RoPax segment,” said Per Westling, managing director of Stena RoRo.

The vessel will carry 1,000 passengers and have a capacity of 3,100 lane metres, making it the largest in the DFDS fleet in the channel.

The ship, which will work the Dover to Calais route, will boast a 25% lower fuel consumption compared to today’s vessels, Stena claimed.

“In addition to this order, we also recently concluded a similar deal with the French ferry operator Brittany Ferries. The other three vessels will be operated by Stena Line on the Irish Sea”, Westling added.
