Tokyo's metropolitan government is chartering an MSC Cruises ship for the 2020 Olympics.

The 65,000-gt MSC Lirica (built 2003) will operate as a hotel vessel during the summer games - and the Paralympics, NHK reported.

Central government has been taking measures to address an expected shortage of hotel beds, the report said.

Tokyo city officials said the ship was chosen after an international tender.

The vessel has about 1,000 staterooms and can accommodate up to 2,600 guests.

It will be docked at a pier in Koto.

More vessels are expected to be booked later on.
