Turkish shipbreakers are getting ready to chomp on the 15,000-gt ro-pax ferry Caribbean Galaxy (built 1973), which departed Piraeus for Aliaga under tow on Sunday evening.

TradeWinds understands that the long laid-up ship was sold via a court process.

The sale brings to a close the ambitions of US-based Atlantic Blue Seaways to launch a Caribbean ferry service. The company bought the ship in early 2016 but apart from giving it a new paint job, never traded it in commercial service.

The ship was originally built as the Orion for Japanese ferry operator Taiyo Ferry. After passing through the ownership of several other Japanese ferry operators, it was sold to Minoan Lines of Greece 1989 and rebuilt as the Daedalus.

Minoan sold the ship to Italian interests in 2005 and it subsequently bounced around the Mediterranean in the hands of a variety of owners and charterers before ending up with Atlantic Blue Seaways.
