A resident of Wellington, New Zealand, has launched an app to warn locals when cruiseship passengers are in town.

The idea has come from office workers tired of wondering if they can go out for lunch without getting caught up in the cruise crowds.

Foghorn, created by Optimal Business Intelligence managing director Victoria MacLennan, may be music to their ears.

The smartphone app alerts residents to cruiseships' arrival times, so they can adjust their plans to avoid queues.

“On days when cruiseships are in town it can be nearly impossible to get to our favourite salad bar, so the idea of creating an app to let us know it’s a cruiseship passenger day was born,” said Optimal Business Intelligence.

“We love sharing our great city with tourists.

"We recognise how important they are for [the] local and national economy.

"We just choose to go to other places for lunch and walk a different way on the days they are here.”
