TradeWinds' favourite sailing ship, the Christian Radich, is currently battling its way through this year’s North Sea Tall Ships race, with young people at the helm to learn more about the seas and how to work in teams.
The elegant vessel — which plays host to TradeWinds’ party at every Nor-Shipping — is part of the three-stage event organised by Sail Training International aimed at people under 25.
Among those are four staff from QBE European Operations, which runs leading fixed premium marine insurer British Marine.
Tom Banks, a credit hire claims specialist at QBE European Operations, who will be a crew member for all three legs of the race, set sail last week with analyst Natalie Doswell, who will be participating in the first leg from Sunderland to Esbjerg onboard the famous ship.
Charlotte Kirkby, a marine underwriting assistant, will be a crew member on the second leg to Stavanger, while Liam Glynn, also an underwriting assistant, will take over as a crew member on the last leg into Harlingen. The second and third legs will take place onboard the Statsraad Lehmkuhl.
Tim Pembroke, director of marine at QBE European Operations, said the race presented an excellent opportunity to take part in a “once-in-a-lifetime adventure” that will help participants “build teamwork, risk management and endurance skills” throughout their journey.
The event began in Sunderland on 11 July and is due to end in the Netherlands on 6 August.
